All the lightbulbs we use are energy efficient, but it is still a very good idea to turn them off when the light is not needed. Every time we turn off a switch, we help reduce air pollution from a coal-fired power plant. All front door lights are on a motion sensor, so you will have light when you need it and darkness when you and the other guests want to admire the night sky.
To help curb air pollution that comes from transporting materials long distances, we try to use natural building materials from local sources. For example, we milled construction lumber from trees grown on our land, and we used plaster that was made locally. We also use paints that are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), the ingredients responsible for the toxic smell emitted by many paints.
